NEED A GETAWAY? RURAL NSW IS OPEN FOR BUSINESS

If a NSW pet-friendly getaway is what you require; something that gives you clean air, time to relax and a digital detox then look no further than St. Albans Courthouse and the hospitality of the Stuart family.

96kms and a ferry ride from Sydney there is a small historic and well-loved village called St. Albans. Originally named McDonald, St Albans changed its name in the 1800’s.  The village, is a true sense of being far removed from the noise and hustle of the city; surrounded by mountains and native wildlife.

Just past the bridge and up the driveway to the left, you will find one of the most beautiful and peaceful places to stay in the area, St. Albans Courthouse.  Built in the 1890’s by convict settlers, this converted courthouse and jail is now a must stay for your next getaway.

The lock-up (jail cells) have been converted into bathrooms, the exercise yard, kept original is now a games room, and the horses stables have been converted into a Studio Apartment. The Courthouse is fully contained with fireplaces throughout.  There is no doubt that you have walked into an iconic part of Australian history when you enter for your stay.

Recently additional accommodation has been added; Tiny St. Albans.  A lovely cosy place that sleeps two adults comfortably with an additional option if you are travelling with little ones.

All three places are completely equipped, but you will need to bring your own food as there is no grocery store in St. Albans.  That being said, you can take in another piece of history and enjoy a meal like the cattle drovers of the past at the local pub. Largely unaltered the Settlers Arms is a short walk from the courthouse and a must stop of a cold one after any adventure.  Want to stay in, that’s fine too, you can enjoy the BBQ or fire pits if that is more your style.

The Courthouse is pet friendly, well animal friendly really and you will most likely be greeted upon arrival by Agnes and Stanley the canine keepers of the Courthouse.  You must be sure to say “hi” to Dave the goat, a local village legend and resident escape artist. Rob, Kate and their beautiful family are usually working somewhere around the property so if you need anything all you need to do is ask.

There is no shortage of things to do in the area, kayaking, bike and hiking trails.  There is a loop trail located near Lower Macdonald, that offers scenic views and is rated as moderate. The trail is primarily used for nature trips, bird watching, and mountain biking.

After a good bushwalk you can wander to the pub 100m away and enjoy a cold beverage, and on occasion, listen to live music, or perhaps enjoy some great food at a fantastic price. If a dip is what is required, there is a swimming pool on site. Just don’t be surprised if all your splashing around attracts the attention Dave, Colin, and Bert, peering over the fence.

This really is a little piece of heaven just a stone’s throw away from Sydney.  Having battled the bushfires and now Covid-19 this little community is open for business.

St. Albans Courthouse follows all the Airbnb Policy for Covid-19.
